How to de-select multiple clips from the timeline in FCP

I often need to apply some parameter(s) to most clips within a timeline, but not to ALL clips. The way I do this is... within FCP, I...

  1. Press Shift + Z to make the timeline zoom to fit my screen.
  2. Press Command + A to highlight every clip in the timeline (approx. 50 clips)

I then need to exclude (de-select) the clips that I do not want to affect with the change(s) I am about to make. I know that... with all clips selected... I can hold down Command and click each individual clip that I want to de-select. However... with the timeline zoomed out like this... it can get very tedious because some clips are simply too small for me to click... and I end up accidentally clicking the edge of the clip which de-selects everything... and I have to start over.

With all clips selected, I thought I'd be able to hold command while I click and hold a selection around the 10 or so chunk of clips I want to de-select. But this doesn't work. It does nothing. Then I thought maybe holding Shift + Command + hold-clicking a selection around the chunk of clips might deselect them. Doesn't work.

I also thought that using the (R) tool to select a range might de-select as I need. But nope.

I know that I could start from having NO clips selected and go through and only select those clips using a combination of Shift-Clicking and Command-Clicking... but... that is... if you could see the timeline(s) I am working with you'd see that is prohibitively difficult.

I'm not familiar with a mouse that can swipe horizontally. I mean... other than actually moving the mouse side to side... or using a track pad... I've never seen a mouse that had any kind of left-right swipe motion. Actually... I think the Apple "Magic Mouse" might have some kind of gesture like this. I used to have a Magic Mouse, but there were a lot of not-so-great features about it that I did not like.

I also really do not like how FCP does not let you easily "swipe" left and right through the time line. At least... I don't know how to do it in a way that I like.

I end up pressing and holding the (H) key to toggle on the "hand" tool, and swipe left or right. But this always ends up having really annoying consequences. Sometimes it doesn't release properly, and the H tool remains, so I have to go back to press (A) to get the regular tool back. Or... even more annoying... I do a lot of work with titles... and every time I want to "scoot" to the right or left... I accidentally type the letter "h" in whatever title I was just working on, and I don't notice it until the project is finished and uploaded. Doh!!!
