Is anyone else using WhatSize? Mine crashes!

I'm having trouble with WhatSize. Am running the most recent version (v.7.7.7) on an M1 iMac, OS Ventura 13.4.1. Program crashes.

Have contacted WhatSizeMac.com twice (on 13 and 21 June) but got no response except for an autoreply. Contacted them again today.

iMac 24″, 13.4

Well, what I did this morning...

I launched Find Any File, looked for WhatSize and deleted all references to it.

Then I went to the WhatSize site and downloaded a new copy, installed it, and opened it up. Had to give disk permissions. Then I registered it.

And now things work as before. No idea what initially caused the crashing (after 36 years of macking, I still can't read a crash report!), but I'm back on business.

Thanks for reading and offering your input.

I would like to end with: ISSUE SOLVED, but...

There's still no-one home at WhatSize.com.

Should I ever get a decent reply, I will add it to this discussion.

I never really asked for help to solve the crashing of WhatSize. I simply wanted to know who else is using the program, and if they were able to contact WhatSize Support. Appears there is at least one other user on board who gets no reply from WhatSize Support. I have now contacted id-design; not even an autoreply (yet).

I am currently using OmniDiskSweeper, which indeed does a good job. I even think it was a free app, whilst I did have to pay for WhatSize.

A quick search with FAF (Find Any File) finds WhatSize files all over the place. I might start removing them manually (as dialabrain suggested) and, once all is gone, start from a new copy, just to check. But it looks like I can move on to OmniDiskSweeper.

Allow me to rephrase my reply, then: please consider asking the patrons of your local lunch counter for their help, as they have as much to do with this app as we do.

Somebody with access to the vendor support database or to the app source code is likely needed here. That’s not the folks at the lunch counter. Or us.

Unless you get extremely lucky here and somehow the posting here gets read by or gets forwarded to the third-party developer, nobody here can suggest anything past delete-restart-redownload and contacting the vendor for a crashing-on-launch app.

I have been using WhatSize for ages, to assess the free/occupied space on my hard drive(s). It's fast and reliable.

There are various alternatives. OmniDiskSweeper and Grand Perspective are two fine alternatives I’ve used.

Re-contact contact the app vendor.

I don’t recommend add-on cleaning tools and add-on performance-optimization tools, as these too often introduce issues, but whee you want that, there are many alternative cleaning or performance apps to choose from.

And again, I do not recommend these apps, as macOS does a pretty good job taking care of itself, and as these add-on apps are almost inherently doing unusual or undocumented or unsupported or version-specific changes to your installed macOS environment.

Have backups.

I have been using WhatSize for ages, to assess the free/occupied space on my hard drive(s). It's fast and reliable. I will never use it to 'autoclean' (provided that it can do that). I just want to know the size of specific folders (like Downloads, which can get bloated very quickly).

As a proficient 'Macker' I do make backups on a regular basis, both through Time Machine, and through CCC (Carbon Copy Cloner). However, I have excluded apps from TM, and tend not to keep old versions of apps any way.

Perhaps it's too early to give up, but it looks like not many Mac users seem to be using WhatSize.

But again: thanks for your reply.

Thank you, Frank, that's helpful. I'm still on 13.4.1 (c) although I have been running WhatSize 7.7.7 for quite some time. I think I am going to remove all traces of WhatSize manually and start over, just to see if I can get things working again. I now know I do have alternatives, but I see no reason to mistrust WhatSize or any app that just assess disk space. It's not any universal system cleaner!

Looks like Ventura 13.5 will be rolled a bit later in this part of the world.
