Make sure whatever you get has "AirPrint" support so that you are not dependent on the vendor keeping the printer drivers up-to-date as macOS operating system version change.

I had an HP M1536dnf multi-function laser printer for 12 years which had AirPrint support (after a firmware update), and until the printer itself died (lightning fried the electronics), I never had to worry about compatibility.

I replaced the HP with a Brother MFCL2750DW black & white multi-function laser printer which also includes AirPrint support. No drivers to worry about, and the Mac sees the printer, the scanner and the FAX services of the Multi-function printer.
