Looking for an older version of MS Office to run on my iMac.

I was able to revive an old iMac that is currently running macOS High Sierra with a 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5.

I am trying to find a version of MS Office for Mac that will run on this system. So far I have tried eBay, Google and Amazon with no luck. I’m hoping someone here can help me.

Thanks in advance

Don't bother. An older version of Office may install but will not activate.

I tried installing my valid copy of Office 2008 on a newer iMac after my 2010 model running High Sierra failed. The new iMac was also running High Sierra, so the 32-bit issue was not in play.

I found Microsoft had taken down the activation server for Office 2008. You can't fix that.

As someone else who owns a copy of Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac, I'm not happy to hear this. But at least I now know of the issue in advance.

+1 for letting us know.

You are welcome. SoC,

I really liked Office 2008 and was disappointed to find that I could not activate it on my newer iMac in 2018. People who follow advice to erase and reinstall their entire disks are going to lose their older Office suites.

I keep 2008 on a older Macbook Pro running Mojave because 2008 can still read old .doc, .xls. and .ppt files and convert them to the newer "x" version like docx. Office 2019 won't open old "non-x" files.

After the failed activation I tried migrating to LibreOffice which is very good, but I found it messed the margins on most files I created in Office. Had this affected only a handful of files, that would not be an issue. However, I have thousands of Word files going back over 30 years. With no way to batch-convert all these, I had to buy a new version of Office.

As an aside, I've followed your progress here and and very impressed with your work. Well-played, and thanks!!
