My disc if full. what is in there?

I went to see what was on the disk by looking at storage when select the Apple.

Almost 60% of it is documents. You would think photos, but I so few.

My question is, when you take a screen shot, are they considered "documents" in storage? Those I have a lot of. If so, I need to take some real time and look/delete. I did try to "google" this to find out. There are many, many links to tell you HOW to take a screen shot. I don't have that problem. They are my memory. But, this is a 2015 MacBook. Pro. I want to get a new one so I am looking at what to move. OMH I have 16 of 500GB left. My Documents file is not that full.

I will thank you in advance for helping me in my state of ignorance.

I have Windows Office installed and have Word Documents, Excel Spreadsheet, Screen Shots, Photos. I still don't understand how data files have ended up in my Application folder. I have an applications file folder, now it shows a App Link folder in the App Folder. That wasn't what it was yesterday.

Now it shows a folder with a name I have used for photosI thought I deleted in error and put them back from the delete file. Inside it are all Archive zip files. I didn't do this.

I am pretty worried at this point My MacBook Pro has been compromised. There are many zip files in this folder and a folders within that folder. I'm afraid to open the ones in there. These files are also in the Apps folder.

What is really strange is they show up in Finder as being in the Apps folder. This all happened after I installed Touch Copy and I haven't used it yet.

I did delete many email files today and of course that hasn't made a dent. I need to run my Duplicate Files pgm as I think many Dup photos are out there.

Documents are pdf, docx, xlsx, xml, doxa, css, jpg. pages, css, html, wav, mid, mov, and I have a huge amount of fonts.

I looked at Storage for HD and it is: (Running on Monterey)

Documents 257.29 GB

Apps 53.71 GB

Photos 9.46 GB

iOS 8.94 GB

Messages 3.64 I just backed these up.

macOS 22.08 GB

System Data 136.29GB. I've never look at this file.( what is in it) Time machine snap shots!!!! + other things.

Trash 5.56 GB

That is 496.97 GB. out of 500 GB

Well System State explained a lot. I will need to figure out what is in the files in Applications and fix those and make sure the original file folders have the data. Then find a Mac cleaner utility program to clean up the garbage. Do I have this correct? (anything with System on it I leave alone. eye opening DUH moment happening here)

Screenshots, by default are saved to your Desktop. My Documents is a folder, not a file, that files may be stored in.

Photos would be in your Pictures folder. If you only have 16 GBs left on a 500 GB hard drive, you're out of space.

I would advise against the use of a Mac Cleaner Utility, they are garbage.

Obviously emptying your Trash would give you an additional 5.56 GBs of space.

I recommend that you make an appointment with the Genius Bar at your nearest Apple Store.
