Copying files to iPad

I have searched the Internet, and cannot find a straight answer. I want to copy some videos to my iPad.

When I do a search on how to do this, every single answer says to use iTunes. Except iTunes no longer exists on the MacOS. And Apple TV (iTunes alleged replacement) doesn't exist on MacOS either.

So, how does one do this? Or, if you can't answer that question, what is the replacement for iTunes on a M1 MacBook Pro running Monterey?

For macOS, you might use Finder.

Otherwise, consider transferring files wirelessly using AirDrop or iCloud.

To use Finder, you’ll need to connect your iPad to your Mac with a USB cable.

iTunes as a service was re-branded some time ago as Apple Music. At the same time, the related Apps on Mac, iPad and iPhone devices were similarly renamed.

iTunes as an App remained with Mac until its functionality was subsumed into Finder and the new Music App at which time references to iTunes disappeared.

Information about macOS Finder - and its use with iPad - can be found here:

For Windows PC, iTunes for Windows is very much alive and kicking - as is iCloud for Windows.

I merely corrected you incorrect presumption that iTunes no longer existed, provided an explanation of its evolution in context of Mac Apps - and have directed you to Finder. Finder requires a USB connection between your iPad and Mac - which can simply be achieved using and appropriate USB cable.

As an alternative, you might consider natively transferring files/photos/videos using iCloud. If your “free” 5GB storage is insufficient, you can upgrade to a paid iCloud+ storage plan. These are relatively inexpensive - and are available with 50GB, 200GB and 2TB storage tiers.

If you’re not prepared to use iCloud, consider using an alternative Cloud service from another provider. If cost is an issue - and available “free” storage plans are too restrictive for your need - consider using Google Drive. Google are one of the more generous in offering 15GB without additional cost.

Although a previously undisclosed factor, that clearly influences your desire to find a workable method to directly transfer files between your Mac and iPad, the issue with your ISP internet connection is clearly beyond scope of the technical issue.

You may also need to consider that Apple actively deter attempts to transfer copyright protected media between devices - instead requiring that DRM-protected material is downloaded directly to the target device from its source. For iPad, Apps and associated storage are sandboxed - which can restrict the ability to access or move files between App storage containers, in particular those relating to video or music.

Remember, Finder on Mac will only show your iPad when it is directly connected to the Mac via USB; the iPad will not be visible to Finder via a WiFi network connection.

If you are unable to resolve your difficulties with Finder, you might consider using a third-party utility App - such as iMazing.

A further alternative might be to consider using a File Manager App with your iPad - that can access network shares. A good choice might be Stratopherix FileBrowser - Document Manager, or its “pro version” FileBrowser Professional:

First of all, the iPad does not show up in Finder despite both machines being on the same network. I know they can connect because I can cut-and-paste from one to the other, and when I start Safari on the Mac, it shows up on the iPad and other things happen between the two often... it just doesn't show up in the Finder. Same problem, as far as I can tell, with AirDrop. I don't use it often but it doesn't seem to see the iPad. As for iCloud, that might be a possibility but I don't have enough space on it to transfer files that way.

Besides, just copying the files over is not good enough. They have to be in the right places on the iPad (and maybe the right format) to be loaded into the Apple TV app on the iPad, or other applications. I can use DropBox to transfer PDFs but those are the only files I can move between machines. And, no, my DropBox doesn't have enough space either.

As I said initially, the way that all the Internet pages say to do what I am trying to do is to use iTunes. But, iTunes no longer exists. Everywhere I look I see that "Apple TV" is the iTunes replacement, but that doesn't exist on the Mac OS side.

If it were possible to connect the iPad to a Mac without having to buy an expensive dongle, that might be a solution. As it stands, it's not a solution.

Apple Music may be an iTunes replacement but it doesn't appear to handle videos which was the original question. It might work for the music I want to copy but not for videos.

iTunes may still be on Windows PCs but I'm on a Mac so it's not relevant. And when I do searching I add "on a mac" to the search phrase and still get hundreds of directions for using iTunes on a Mac to transfer videos and other files to iPads.

So, nothing in your answer is really useful to me.

I borrowed a friend's dongle. None of the files that I wanted to copy from the Mac to the iPad were copyable, mostly because I didn't know where to put them where they could be found by the iPad apps such as Apple TV. I think several of the files just weren't copyable at all via Finder.

I had said in my initial statement that iTunes no longer existed in Mac OS. That is a true statement. I also said that Apple TV didn't exist on the MacOs. That also is a true statement. I also said that every "help" file I can find on transferring files from the Mac to an iPad say to use iTunes. That is also a true statement and is not possible.

Uploading to ANY service, whether DropBox or iCloud or someone else is not a solution since my ISP refused to give me anything but 5 MBPS upload speed. At that rate, it would take an extremely long time to transfer the files and is untenable.

I still do not have a viable solution for my problem.
