I got this iPhone 4 for free and I repaired the battery because it was makeing the back of the glass lift up so after I replaced it I wiped the info off of it and I tried to update it but when I try to update it, it just doesn’t work the button turns gray then turns back to black so please help me

Unfortunately, you have an obsolete iPhone using an obsolete operating system. At least the phone was worth the price that you paid, maybe less.
Apple won't even look at the phone, but you could try an independent repair shop in your area if you have money to burn and very low expectations.
The iPhone 4 is a 2G / 3G phone. I take it that you either are not in the U.S., or are using the phone only as an iPod Touch – because in the U.S., all of the 3G networks are shut down. I'm not sure of the timetable for other parts of the world, but it sounds like many of the places that still have 2G / 3G coverage are phasing it out.
