Muting Apple TV causes video to go out

Muting the Apple TV with the remote causes the video to go out and it can get take a bit of clicking and restarting to get the video back. No internet or cable issues. OS already updated and have restarted several times. Why is this happening?

Solved. The Apple TV was plugged into the HDMI ARC port. That was causing the problem. I switched HDMI ports and it no longer blacks the screen when volume goes to 0. If only all fixes were that easy!

Do you have the Apple TV box with the Siri Remote? If so, which model? [1] [2] [3]

Or is this about the Apple TV app on a different device? If so, which brand and model?

Why is this happening?

It shouldn’t be happening, and not sure how it even could. Video and audio are quite separate for controls. Yours is the first message that I see about this issue.

If the issue persists, I would suggest to contact an expert from the Apple Support staff for further assistance. Contact Apple for support and service (phone numbers) or start your support request online (chat/email/callback).

I am having the same issue. Apple TV 4K on a TCL tv. Any time I push mute on the TCL remote, or lower the sound to zero on either remote, it blacks out the screen and I can’t get it back without unplugging the Apple TV and turning the TV on and off. It’s maddening.

This isn’t an issue with the Apple TV remote since it happens with the TV’s normal remote as well (note: it only happens when using the Apple TV, when in the normal installed TV apps it does not occur). This is an issue with the Apple TV triggering some kind of black out command when volume hits zero on the TV.
