Hey jrixh,

That's a great question! To update the firmware, you'll need an updated Apple device, and then they should update automatically. If you don't have an Apple device, an Apple Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider can help. Those details can be found in the section "Find your AirPods firmware version" in the guide you recently viewed. Here's that link, just in case: About firmware updates for AirPods - Apple Support

Find your AirPods firmware version

Firmware updates are delivered automatically while your AirPods are charging and in Bluetooth range of your iPhone, iPad, or Mac that's connected to Wi-Fi. You can also use your iPhone, iPad, or Mac to check that your AirPods have the latest version.

To use your iPhone or iPad to check that your AirPods are up to date, make sure that you have the latest version of iOS or iPadOS. Go to Settings > Bluetooth, then tap the Info button  next to the name of your AirPods. Scroll down to the About section to find the firmware version.

To use your Mac to check that your AirPods are up to date, make sure that you have the latest version of macOS. Press and hold the Option key while choosing Apple menu  > System Information. Click Bluetooth, then look under your AirPods for the firmware version. With macOS Ventura, you can also choose Apple menu  > System Settings, click Bluetooth, then click the Info button  next to the name of your AirPods.

If you don't have an Apple device nearby, you can set up an appointment at an Apple Store or with an Apple Authorized Service Provider to update your firmware.

This solution does NOT work with my new AirPods. I’ve had them a week, disconnected them put them in my ears for 30 seconds then closed the case with them on charge and nothing I do so far will update the firmware from their current, which is 5A377, so at least two versions out of date. I bought these new a week ago. Any ideas before I return them to the store?

Here is what happened to me: I took my NFG AirPods to an Apple Store and they showed me that my AirPods are FAKE, even though I purchased them at a Walmart. Once I had purchased AirPods which weren’t counterfeit all worked perfectly. Some tell tale signs for the FAKE ones I purchased:

  • you cannot automatically update firmware
  • you try to register serial number with Apple via Apple Store app and there is something incorrect with the purchase date. This will prompt you to call them
  • sound is too bassy
  • if things like noise cancellation and Spatial don’t seem to work then this is definitely a good clue. Once I had a legit set in my ears the difference was shocking.

Mine came in a real looking box and there is no way to have known until after purchase, but ultimately the Apple Store technician showed me that the recharge light is dimmer than a legit product and the font size just slightly different. Both these are obvious when compared to a legit case, but you wouldn’t know by itself.

It’s pretty upsetting that a place like Walmart can sell fake items like this, and we will see if they do anything about it. So far it’s not looking good. But be warned, though we want to trust major retailers, my experience suggests we need to only purchase directly from Apple. Hope this helps.
