cmd-c copy-and-paste in safari on desktop (iMac)

iMac 2017, Ventura 13.4.1, Safari 16.5.2, rebooted in the last 24 hours.

In some webpages (mostly news webpages like CNN, I've noticed), I've been having trouble copy-and-paste-ing from Safari to another app. If I highlight the text I want, then hit Cmd-C, I get a beep, which I interpret as some sort of error, since no text is copied.

However, Edit -> Copy works.

I know I have a work-around, but I'd like to find the solution that allows me to use the keyboard, since I'm a keyboard kinda person (been using Emacs for 30 years)

Any ideas?

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.

NOTE 1: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following;

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

NOTE 2: if you have a wireless keyboard with rechargeable batteries connect it with its charging cable before booting into Safe Mode. This makes it act as a wired keyboard as will insure a successful boot into Safe Mode.

I would try a different browser and compare your results...this would be telling.
