but it's probably easier to just get a stylus pen they are pretty cheap
I need to clarify because “stylus” is misleading what I mean. I would like to use my pencil to “touch” like my finger.
I have inexpensive ones that have the “soft” touch part on one end and that is what I am looking for to be able to use my pencil as pencil and be able to scroll and select with the soft part instead of putting the pencil down to use my finger as I am doing now. If I would be able to turn off the pencil to use it to scroll and swipe and turn it on to write, scribble, draw would be great. If it’s not possible to purchase a soft “cap” for the non-useable end I’ll just have to be content using the pencil as is and use my finger to swipe up and to scroll.

the amazon link leads to pens that also have a capacitive touch point that sort of look like an eraser on the other end have several of such stylus and they work great, on both ipads and iphones, just your finger would
Hi! I've been trying to figure out the same. None of the solutions shared below answer the question, though I appreciate a good DIY hack. Surprised the apple pencil doesn't have a 'stylus mode'!
