Troubleshooting a Mac Keyboard:
- Use An External Keyboard:
If using the builtin keyboard does not work properly for entering the password, then use an external keyboard so do so. It doesn't have to be Apple brand. You might need this adapter: USB-C to USB A Adapter - Apple
- Boot in to Safe Mode:
In Safe Mode, login items do not run, and corrupt system files(i.e. caches) are intentionally reset as a way to fix issues. So, boot into it, seeing if you then log in. Once logged in, power off, and then unplug the keyboard. Then, report. The caches would have been reset what logged in, in Safe Mode: Start up your Mac in Safe Mode - Apple Support
