Lately, my iPhone 12 Pro Max has been saving files as MOVȀ extension instead of MOV. I'm shooting at 4K and 60 fps. My PC can't figure out which app to use to open the files. Fortunately I can see them in Cyberlink PhotoDirector. What would cause this and how can I stop it from happening? Thanks in advance

Thanks for getting back with me. I'm in the US shooting video and photos with my iPhone 12 Pro Max. I'm shooting in "Most Compatible" instead of High Efficiency yet a look at the properties of the most recent video shows HEVC.
Other videos have just the MOV extension but some sort of character over the V. The same for some JPGs with the character over the J. The problem seems to be sporadic as there will be photos and videos with normal extensions taken between the problem ones. Look closely at the last letter of the file extensions below.
My first question is where in the world you are? - or at least which languages and characters are configured on your devices? Is the Ȁ character part of your regular working character set?
The next question is how you are creating these files (which app? which device?).
Finally, where are you seeing the files stored and listed as your screen shot? Is that on a PC or MacBook?, hard disk? Removable media? Cloud storage?
I can imagine two most likely causes, first that whatever creates these file names has got a corrupted default extension setting. Second would be a character set and regional settings issue or mismatch between different devices. Having said that, I am certainly prepared to find that guess is way wrong
Okay, this is really getting weird. I downloaded the same videos through Google Photos instead of transferring them via USB Cable and the extenions are back to MOV and they play in Microsoft Photos, This is a real head scratcher.
Interesting. You're experiencing it too. I'm using Windows 10 and the phone is a 12 Pro Max but, like you, I'm running IOS 17. I'm guessing there's a bug in 17 causing this problem. I'll be buying a 15 Pro Max next month. Hope they get the issue resolved.
Similarly on ios 17 and Windows 11. iPhone 13 Pro Max.
