icons for external hard drive have disappeared. How do I get them back

external drive icons Since updating to Ventura 13.0.1 the icons for my external hard drives relocate themselves on the desktop. This seems to happen when the Mac has been in SLEEP mode for awhile. I will drag them back to where I want them, but overnight some (but not all) will move to a different space on the desktop.

Unable to change external drive folder icons After the Sonoma upgrade, I cannot change an external drive's (ie. Sandisk USB stick) folder icon. I have been using the technique of copying a picture, selecting the folder's info, and then pasting the copied picture onto the upper left hand icon, which then displays the copied picture. This technique now does not work, and I am unable to change the folder icon on the external drive.

Finder Preferences

and

If the drive has dis-mounted, you can cause it to re-mount by disconnecting and re-connecting.
