when is NFC on?

The NFC chip in an iPhone allows easy ApplePay. No wifi or Bluetooth needed. Everyone says that the NFC chip defaults to "on". But on my iPhoneSE, in the Control Panel, I found it turned "off". I never turned it off. What's the deal? Is it on by default or not?

Thanks for the reply.

That’s not “NFC” … that is your mobile network. (i.e. your mobile carrier’s voice, SMS, and data)

There is no user-facing “on/off switch” for NFC nor is there any “NFC Status” indicator.

You’re welcome.

It’s occasionally a point of some confusion.

As NFC’s range is only a few inches and it’s power consumption is minuscule; a decision was apparently made to NOT add user confusion and the opportunity for malfunction which an “on/off” switch would surely cause.

(e.g. “My ApplePay will not work” or “My Transit Pass will not work.” )
