I tried to upgrade the OS on a 2011 iMac from El Capitan to High Sierra. The installation failed but however, many times I have restarted it. It comes up with a gray screen and the failed installation window. Is there a way to get rid of that screen and return to a desktop, or is there still a desktop? thanks for any solutions or suggestions. I’m quite desperate. This is text!

Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at startup), does the problem occur in Safe Mode? Could take 10 minutes or more.
Safe mode attempts to repair Disks & clears lots of caches & loads safe Drivers, & prevents loading of 3rd party extensions, so if Safe Mode works try again in regular boot.

Why were you upgrading to High Sierra? Was it to fix another issue? If so, then that issue may be the real problem which may point to a hardware failure, most likely a bad hard drive. You can try running the Apple Diagnostics to see if any hardware issues are detected. Depending on whether the High Sierra system firmware update was installed will determine if you have access to the online diagnostics. Unfortunately the diagnostics don't detect most failures, but if it does, then you know you most likely have a hardware issue.
