Why does my MacBook Air have a screen that looks asleep though the computer is active

For some time now the display appears to be asleep. Though if I close the lid and reopen it the computer wakes but is then covered again by the black screen. I’m not fond of the open and close tactic so would love some insight.

Our two MacBook Pros have always done that, as did our old Windows laptops. Sleep when the timer activates and wakes when we open the lid only to sleep again when the timer times out again.

Have you tried rattling the mouse if here is one, pressing the Space bar or some other key? There are multiple ways to wake a sleeping Mac. And depending on how you have sleep set up, they sleep again.
