Transfer from imac to MacBook Air

I am transferring my data from my old iMac (2011) to my new MacBook Air by using the migration assistant. The screen on my MacBook says it is transferring 476 GB of data from my old imac. I don’t understand as the iMac only had 250 gb of storage.

Troubleshooting Data Size:

How many partitions are there? If you are not stuck in the middle of the transfer, then go into Disk Utility, and see what is shown.

"I went ahead and started the transfer. Sorry, I don’t know what partitions are. Once I connect my external hard drive, will that move data off the machine?"

How Migration Assistant Works:

If you are using migration assistant, it will move data from the drive, and onto the internal hard drive.

Seeing Partitions:

Go here: Add, Delete, or Erase APFS volumes in Disk Utility on Mac - Apple Support. Looking at the top-left corner of Disk Utility, you'd see Internal. So, if more Ethan one proton is shown, then you'd see if listed there. Screenshot of Disk Utility (the partitions outlined in red):
