Three compasses in the same car last night pointing at the rising full moon over the Atlantic ocean. All three showed different, incorrect, compass readings. We’ve all gone through the steps in settings, recommended by some on the Internet. How do we fix this?

When you are in a (steel) car the earth’s magnetic field is distorted by the car’s superstructure, so different locations in the car will give different readings. To actually check the compasses get out of the car in an open area some distance away from all metal.
