Update "Burn" app or better way to copy DVD on Mac running Catalina 10.15.7 and apparently 32-bit

What's wrong with simply asking a question?

Hi, Swatara48, John B here, there's nothing wrong with asking a question.....I know the "Burn" app and have used it many times in the past....it's for burning a CD, maybe a DVD, but it won't copy DVD's......for that maybe you could try Handbrake.... or you'd have to buy a commercial application/app/piece of software to do that.... am assuming that the DVD in question is one you own, and that it's not copy-protected

there's nothing wrong with asking a question. :)

I personally use the free app HandBrake to rip DVDs and save them to my local drive. I then use Burn to burn the videos to a DVD that can be played on a stand alone DVD player.

but the handbrake app DOES NOT work if trying to copy DRM protected DVDs like most commercially available DVD movies and the like. it will not allow the ripping to proceed. it is called piracy, and would be illegal in most locations on earth.

I don't understand the "32-bit" angle of your question. burn is a 64-bit app, as is handbrake. as of Catalina, macOS is strictly 64-bit.

Thanks. Re “asking question” my apologies. Frustrated by all the questions I had to answer to get here.

No interest in copying “copy protected” material. Mostly copying documentaries from DVR to DVD. Been thinking about transferring to external drive instead of DVD. HandBrake seems like it would help me do that sooner than I expected.

Can’t tell if I have 32-bit or 64-bit.

Too often we get “help me!” or “it doesn’t work!” as the sum total of the question.

The built-in media-burning tool works fine on macOS 13.

Handbrake has been mentioned, and the Roxio Toast app is still around. There may be an update to the Burn app you are using too, but I’m unsure which app this might be—there are several apps with very similar names.

Old apps can be 32-bit. Any app that’s been actively maintained in the past decade or so is 64-bit. Macs are 64-bit starting with the Intel Core 2 models; for a very long time. If you’re running 10.15, your Mac is 64-bit.
