In the archive I found an article that suggested checking the last reset under Settings->Cellular. For my iPhone 7 it says June 16, 2015, but as far as I can tell the iPhone 7 wasn't even announced until 15 months after that on September 16, 2016.
Any ideas on how that's possible or even better how to find out when the phone was added to my apple ID?

Most Apple serial numbers from about 2010 up to a few years ago are 12 alphanumeric characters in length, and included a manufacturing date code in the fourth (half year) and fifth (week of half year) character positions.
Tables with this data decoded are posted around the ‘net. Search for Decode The Meaning Behind Your Apple Serial Number or such.
(But do not enter your serial number in any not-Apple website!)
