Connecting Apple LED Cinema Display to mac Studio M2

I recently got my new mac Studio M2. So far so good. To get the Display (which has a Display Port Mini connector), I purchased an adaptor. It is a Female Display Port Min to Made Thunderbolt adaptor. Works great.

The only problem is that I am not able to set the display brightness anywhere. The F2 and F1 keys do not work. So the monitor works, but it is in the 'predetermined' brightness.

Ideas?

When going into the Display settings (icon with 'two sliders' in Menu Bar) it shows the two displays I have attached. The display brightness slider is just a solid grey (indicating not available).

I know the USB connector from the monitor is attached as my wired tackball, and keyboard are plugged into the back of the monitor - in USB ports there.
