I followed the directions to export to PDF. When I share it, instead of a PDF link it basically pastes the document to my email. I need to actually have the link that the receiver can open. This happens sometimes but not always. How do I get it to just attach a PDF link?

I'm not sure if this is entirely what you are talking about but have you tried to control clicking on the pdf (in the email) and select view as icon. (Only multiple page pdfs show as icons automatically.)

Pages will attach a PDF to a Mail compose window. It is not a link to anything. The recipient will either be able to open or save that attachment. The attachment view options have been explained by picas.
