AirPod Pro 2: Find My and fast user switching issues

My AirPod Pro 2 earbuds disappear from the Find My app (iPhone and Mac apps) every time I use fast user switching on my Mac Mini.

The issue seemed to have resolved after a macOS update a few weeks (months?) ago, but for some reason has come back this week.

  1. AirPods and Mac Mini software is all fully up to date.
  2. AirPods replaced by Apple. Same issue with new ones.
  3. I have reset and reconnected many times.

Hi alex

I'm glad I found at least one person with the same problem! My Apple Support contact says it is a known issue, and there's potentially hundreds of us.

I'm just hoping the new macOS Sonoma and/or iOS 17 will fix it. I'm sick of getting alerts that my Airpods are tracking me, or I've left them behind! But I don't even know if Apple are actively working on a fix, or just waiting for there to be enough reported issues for them to bother fixing it.

Can we figure out anything similar between our cases that might help Apple pinpoint this? In my case, all I can think of is some sort of corruption in my iCloud family account. I do occasionally get glitches with Screentime approvals for my kids' accounts...

When I was working with a senior level support executive in January, they pinpointed the issue, reproduced it, and told me their engineers also accepted that it was an issue. I have updated my software to iOS 17 and Sonoma, and the issue persists. At this point, I don't think they're going to fix it.

The issue is not related to an iCloud account. I reformatted my computer and started over and added another account not connected to my iCloud family, and it still had the issue. For some reason the computer seeing that we are fast switching users is the problem. The workaround is each time you want to log in to a different user is to log out of the current user and then log in to the new user. Do not use fast user switching. That is where the problem lies.

That's unfortunate that the lates OS hasn't fixed it.

Like you I reinstalled macOS on my computer (twice actually) and added a new dummy user.

Not using fast user switching would really **** me off. I'm not sure which I would find more annoying.

This issue seems to be very localised, otherwise the internet would be flooded with families having the same issue. I'm sure it's a head scratcher for Apple. I just wish I could see evidence of them trying to fix it.

My Apple advisor aid not to worry as both my Mac Mini and Airpods are in warranty. So the nuclear option is to get new devices. I just wish I had confidence that would actually fix it... I still sense it's a software issue.

It’s 100% a software issue. My tech rep reproduced the problem on a separate laptop. I also replaced my AirPods before I discovered the cause of the problem.

Im guessing not enough people realize it’s a problem so Apple doesn’t care. I spent weeks with Apple support in January just to find out it still isn’t fixed.

yep, you have to decide between no fast user switching or not find my. I may return the AirPods because this is wildly ludicrous.
