Photos in system library on iMac not fully syncing to iCloud - folders and albums only partly visible

Hi,

I have 27,000+ photos in my local photo system library on my iMac which is stored in the pictures folder. I switched on photos in iCloud and have 2 TB storage capacity. I also switched on the iCloud sync on my Macbook, iPhone and and iPad.

My iMac has a high volume of older photos I want to upload into iCloud so I have them available on my other devices as well.

The sync however stops after a little less than 4,000 photos. Recent photos seem to have been uploaded, but none of the older photos are available in iCloud. The weird thing is that part of the folders and albums I created on my iMac in Photos are (but not all of them).

Does anybody in this forum have an idea what might be going on and how to solve it?

What is the status bar showing on your Mac, below the "All Photos" album? Is it indicating any problems, like "items on this Mac only"? Or "Unable to upload"?

If not, you may just need to be patient and wait. With 27000+ items the upload into iCloud Photos may take more than a week to complete. It is not just a data transfer, Photos needs to recreate the Photos Library in iCloud and merge the items from your Mac into the existing iCloud Photos Library. While Photos is still uploading the the number of items uploaded may appear to be stuck for a long time.

But if Photos is indicating problems in the status bar, deal with them as described here: Check the status of your library in Photos for macOS - Apple Support

If there are items in your library that are referenced or unable to upload, you have to remove them, because they can block the upload into iCloud Photos.

Hi, thanks for your response!

iMac version is Ventura 13.4.1

iPad OS is 16.1

iPhone 12 is 16.5.1

I see the same folders and images on iCloud, iPad and iPhone.

The system library on the IMac has many more folders, albums, photos and videos then that have been uploaded to iCloud. Some folders have been sync’d with iCloud, but have remained empty. These empty folders are now also visible in my iPad and iPhone. Originally these were only present on the iMac, so there was some partial and very small upload.

I rebooted the iMac and started again, but that did not help. So far the Apple helpdesk has not been able to help.

Thanks for your quick reply again :-)

In the status bar, it indicated that the sync was completed with a timestamp and no activity going on with only a small portion uploaded. That was the situation for about 12 hours more or less.

I then rebooted the iMac and at first I had the same situation. Then after about an hour, the message changed to 'Syncing 25.395 Items to iCloud'. Which roughly is the volume of the missing items.

So I will let it run now and check in the morning if there has been any kind of movement. At the moment it is again in this status for about 2 - 3 hours. Guess I have to be very patient!

Thanks for your help!
