Can I use my late 2012 iMac as a monitor for my M2 Macbook Pro?

I tried connecting the two with a mini display port and HDMI cable however, nothing seems to be appearing. Is there any way I can use my iMac as a monitor?

No. You could use Luna Display, Duet Display or install AirServer on your iMac to act as an AirPlay Receiver.
