Optimum os for late 2014 Mac mini?

Just bought late 2014 Mac mini. Has 4 k which I understand is a limiting factor. It has high sierra 10.13. Is there another apple os that might be faster or more functional.?

Mojave (10.14) is optimal if you have or wish to use legacy 32-bit mac applications. Otherwise I generally recommend the penultimate supported version as optimal, or Big Sur (11.x) in this case.

Monterey (12.x) is the newest supported and is now required to update Apple's iWork applications (Pages, Numbers, etc) which may add functionality but will probably be slower, especially if your mini only has 4GB RAM.

All of the above also really need an SSD to function correctly. If your mini has an HDD it would be best to reinstall MacOS onto an external USB 3.0 SSD.
