I have been using my MacBook Pro M1 Max 2021 for 9 months now. I use it for fairly intensive tasks such as video editing & exporting, music production, photo editing etc. I use my laptop daily for work, in clamshell mode, connected to an external monitor via USB-C and unplug it every night without fail. I work directly on the laptop unplugged about once a week.
However, I am slightly concerned that after only 9 months of usage and 34 charge cycles, the battery's maximum capacity has already dropped to 93%. Does this appear to be normal or should I seek further advice?
Normal.
I would not be "concerned" here....just use your mac as you see fit.
The rule of thumb—if you are near the mains leave it plugged in, if you need the portability then run on the battery only—this is how you optimize your battery charging and extend the working life of your battery by reducing the cycle count.
if you are using Battery Health Management software—
The battery health management software (BHM) can put on hold your charging this is the new normal, 80% is common yes, however this is not static it is dynamic…BHM interpolates your usage pattern, and can hold it at 92% 88% 84% 76% 72% etc. however the complex algorithm deems best for long term health.
BHM can actually improve your % Battery Health over time. It is not necessarily a linear downhill progression .
