QuickTime Player doesn’t decode AV1 (yet), that is still future ideas. So you will have to use a different media player for such files.
quick time player as far as I remember came on my mac. I saved the photos on my mac. Why did they save to a program that doesnt open the photos?

I am vlc to open. At one time did apple use AVI Quick time. R u related to Dr in Houston Tx? Ortho?

Do you mean .avi wrapper or AV1 video codec? Current QuickTime Player does not support either of them.

Possibly you had the old QuickTime Player 7 with the Perian component?
That wouldn’t work on macOS Catalina 10.15 (2019) or later.
