Outgoing mail is stuck in "sending". Cannot see the messages that were sent in the "Sent" folder.

Mail shows messages sending in lower left corner and has not progressed. Messages that were sent do not appear in the "Sent" folder as they are still sending.

Need to know how to delete these messages in order to shut down mail.
