M1 MacBookAir 2020 and LG 34WK95U strange behaviour

Hi folks

I see some very strange behaviour on a LG 34WK95U 5K Display and my 2020 MacBook Air connected by USB-C.

It used to work with full resolution 5120x2160 and also with the scaled LoRes resolutions eg. 2060x1080 etc., but not in clamshell mode with closed lid, the external display flickers and will switch off after some time. So I tried playing around with BetterDisplay and I managed to mess it up completely :-(. Now the external display connects/disconnects in a five second internal from the MacBookAir and all windows are jumping back and forth between the two displays, which makes it unusable. The only fix is to switch of the external display and use an iPad as additional external display (sidecar, extended display) and when the LG display is switched on or connected again, everything is fine, but when the iPad is disconnect, the problem raises up again.

What I tried (without success)

  • removing display related preferences com.apple.windowserver.displays.plist in both /Library/Preferences and ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost
  • rebooting in "safe mode"
  • shutdown the MacBookAir and wait for more then 30 seconds
  • using another cable

The same display is working on a 2021 MacBookPro 16" (still on Monterey) with the same cable, even in clamshell mode , so I assume it is a software problem.

I'm using the actual macOS Ventura 13.5 on the MacBookAir.

Any ideas?

Hi Jyam_8,

Thanks for your advice, I deinstalled all non apple apps related to display settings and I discovered an additional prefs file ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Displays-Settings.extension.plist which I removed has well. After rebooting in safe mode the display is recognized again and it is working now even in clamshell mode with closed lid.

Better Display is an app available on github and homebrew for tweeking display settings and I never had problems with it.

Strange thing for me is still, why was the LG display working well when I added an iPad as additional display (sidecar) ?

Hello fillg1,

What is "BetterDisplay"? Is that something from LG to manage the monitor settings or is it some 3rd party application? If it's a 3rd party application not from LG and your problems started after you used that, the first thing you'll want to do is remove that from the computer to see if that corrects the problem.

Here's some general steps you can try for connection issues with external monitors: If your Mac doesn’t recognize an external display

Since you've already confirmed the display is working properly on another computer and the problem is coming from this specific computer, you'll want to contact Apple if it's still not working properly to report the issue: Get Support

Cheers!
