How to return to the iPad view on WSJ app?

For some reason, my WSJ app changed to an iPhone view on the iPad. I can’t figure out how to return to the iPad view?

Totally agree!! It has to be WSJ team that came up with this stupid idea. The only reason I can think of is that it reduces the app maintenance and release efforts by having a similar version across different platforms i.e. iPad , iPhone nevertheless the user experience on the iPad makes me less likely to renew my subscription.

I finally got an answer from WSJ customer service pointing me at the print edition app. It's essentially a copy of the print edition so you have to turn the page, then zoom in to finish an article. If I wanted the print edition (which I used to have) I'd buy one. I don't have print because WSJ can't deliver it reliably. Not sure which of their marketing geniuses came up with that one. (Maybe they hired some folks from Budweiser).

Anyway, the print edition app is a very poor substitute for the old iPad app. I went ahead and cancelled my subscription out of pure disappointment. Hopefully enough subscribers will push back and they will restart what was one of my favorite apps.

Really disappointed with the change and was very puzzled why nothing was communicated about the change so thanks to these posts for confirming my suspicion. I go on safari to wsj.com to get views of the paper vs using the app. I want to cancel my wsj subscription but hoping they will come to their senses in the next few weeks and fix the ipad app.

i have the same issue on my 5th Gen Ipad Pro 12.9. When i finally got thru to a L2 support, they revealed that the app is managed by a third party and that it currently only works on the 6th gen models. in my experience this holds true as my wife has a 6th gen and the app works correctly.

i have had this problem in past updates to the app and it has gotten corrected with the next revision.

heres hoping because what we got isn't very useful!

Glad I found this thread. When this change dropped on my iPad Air2 while using it on 7 September I thought WSJ must have had some catastrophic update error. I’m still hoping that’s the case and it will be fixed because I have raved about the WSJ’s UX design for the iPad, but using the iPhone display just puts the X in ***. The difference in the programming cannot be that great that WSJ would just cheap out and drop support for a great iPad app. Or would it? 😠

I was very distressed and disappointed by the new WSJ app (version 14). I emailed WSJ customer support and also left a review in the Apple App store. Here are the responses that I received.

The developer response (WSJ product team) through the app store:

The update to our iPad layout is part of our broad and ongoing effort to create a more immersive platform and better showcase all of our great image, video, and graphics content. We hope you will find that the new layout strengthens the delivery of our content, and makes it easier to stay up to date with the latest news from WSJ.

I don't understand how "the new layout strengthens the delivery of our content".

Go to the App Store and read the app reviews with a "most recent" filter and you will see that nobody likes this. I contacted WSJ again (after I cancelled my subscription) and advised them to do the same.

This used to be a 5-Star App over several years. It's now a 4.7 and dropping quickly due to all the one-star reviews. Contacting WSJ directly with concerns is better than posting to the App Store... (which is still good) because they don't appear to be paying attention to the Apple App Store reviews.

What a load of bullpucky.

The likely translation of the marketing word salad is, "even though we already developed a 5-star iPad-specifict version of the WSJ that fully utilizes its larger screen size, we're cheap and don't want to pay even the marginal incremental expense of maintaining an iPad version to keep up with the lastest iOS. So, instead, we're going to the lowest common denominator (the iPhone implementation), and render your iPad into a Super-Duper Phablet. Have a nice day." 😒
