How to return to the iPad view on WSJ app?

For some reason, my WSJ app changed to an iPhone view on the iPad. I can’t figure out how to return to the iPad view?

Just a note, I doubt anyone at WSJ has a disciplined process for reading this thread. There have been a couple of scripted responses from the WSJ on interim (and unacceptable) efforts to "fix" the app. I encourage you to email/talk to them directly. If you are still a subscriber, you can contact their customer service via your account.

Like many others in this discussion, I cancelled my subscription, which makes it more difficult to contact them.

Someone also posted a link to a survey which has a freeform text box on the last question. Check earlier parts of the thread.

Interestingly, The WSJ staff just replied to my email inquiry. As it turns out, they are fair and are listening. Here is the reply:

Dear WSJ iPad user:

In recent weeks, we’ve heard from many of you about the changes to the WSJ iPad format. We wanted to let you know that, in response, our team has been diligently working to restore elements of the app experience that you had come to expect.

We deeply respect how much The Wall Street Journal is part of your daily news intake. We’re also grateful for your dedication to our journalism, as evident in your communication with our customer service team and colleagues.

As a result of your feedback, popular features will return to the iPad experience, including access to previous issues of the paper, which will be available in the Print Edition section of the app later this week. This will join other recently reintroduced features, including:

  • Navigation between articles by swiping left and right and access to other sections through the renamed “Sections” menu in the top left corner of the screen
  • Improved layouts for larger devices and landscape orientation
  • Offline reading available for today’s whole Print Edition issue
  • Design enhancements in the Print Edition, including a more familiar layout that prominently highlights the top story, a reintroduction of our vertical What’s News layout, and updated previews that display the beginning of each article

Please ensure you’ve updated the app to access the above features. As a loyal WSJ subscriber, we deeply value your trust in our product, and we’re dedicated to making it right. In the coming weeks, you can expect to see additional changes to the iPad experience, including enhanced navigation, updates to the current article view and further design improvements to ensure we deliver a more holistic reading experience.

We apologize for the inconvenience and the disruption these changes may have caused to your experience with the WSJ app. We will continue to make updates based on your valuable feedback. Thank you for your patience while we work to bring back the features you love. Our Customer Service team is always available at support@wsj.com

I don't view this as positively as some folks appear to since they still have not done what they've promised (which should not be that difficult based on my own personal experiences in SW Development and Product Management). Further, if they would just tell us all what happened, and why. I think it would buy some goodwill as well. Regardless, hopefully they will get this resolved soon.

One observation from all the App Store reviews.....they have lost a lot of long time customers paying upwards of $40 a month who are now being exposed to customers like me who pay $1/week for WSJ, Barrons, and Market Watch. My comments on what I pay were edited out but enough got through that should open their eyes.

While iPad users may be a smaller slice of their users, their average revenue per users is probably much higher and will go down substantially because of the decision they made when V14 launched. And the user demographics for their ad business probably got hammered also.

My sense is Daniel and his team are under intense pressure from the highest levels to get this right ASAP.

I kept seeing this “helpful” message and had no clue what they were talking about plus the e- version took forever to download. I was forced to read the Washington Post first before the wsj downloaded. Not a good way to start my day. I did what many others have done, deleted the ap etc. I kept getting the $1 promotion subscription. I had just paid for my regular subscription. $39 or something. Can anyone figure out what their word salad means? What should we do to get our wsj back?

How to return to the iPad view on WSJ app?
