How to return to the iPad view on WSJ app?
For some reason, my WSJ app changed to an iPhone view on the iPad. I can’t figure out how to return to the iPad view?

I was very distressed and disappointed by the new WSJ app (version 14). I emailed WSJ customer support and also left a review in the Apple App store. Here are the responses that I received.

The developer response (WSJ product team) through the app store:
The update to our iPad layout is part of our broad and ongoing effort to create a more immersive platform and better showcase all of our great image, video, and graphics content. We hope you will find that the new layout strengthens the delivery of our content, and makes it easier to stay up to date with the latest news from WSJ.
I don't understand how "the new layout strengthens the delivery of our content".
I had the same issue, as of a few days ago. I find the new app version utterly unusable and painful. I just emailed WSJ support/CEO Almar Latour @ support@wsj.com
You may wanna do the same. Hopefully if enough people complained, they will go back to the previous version.
Let WSJ know of your dissatisfaction with their app.

I had the same problem and called the WSJ Customer Service. I was told specifically that Apple changed the App. I have to believe that WSJ is in charge of their own app. As a result of the change the WSJ iPad app is useless to me, too hard to find the new daily news. I cancelled my subscription with regret.
Totally agree!! It has to be WSJ team that came up with this stupid idea. The only reason I can think of is that it reduces the app maintenance and release efforts by having a similar version across different platforms i.e. iPad , iPhone nevertheless the user experience on the iPad makes me less likely to renew my subscription.
Glad I found this thread. When this change dropped on my iPad Air2 while using it on 7 September I thought WSJ must have had some catastrophic update error. I’m still hoping that’s the case and it will be fixed because I have raved about the WSJ’s UX design for the iPad, but using the iPhone display just puts the X in ***. The difference in the programming cannot be that great that WSJ would just cheap out and drop support for a great iPad app. Or would it? 😠
Go to the App Store and read the app reviews with a "most recent" filter and you will see that nobody likes this. I contacted WSJ again (after I cancelled my subscription) and advised them to do the same.
This used to be a 5-Star App over several years. It's now a 4.7 and dropping quickly due to all the one-star reviews. Contacting WSJ directly with concerns is better than posting to the App Store... (which is still good) because they don't appear to be paying attention to the Apple App Store reviews.
Are you sure whatever "newest" iPad you are running wasn't running the older version of the app? It appears the crippleware is v. 14. Mine either automatically updated or WSJ pushed it out unbidden while I was actually running the app.
Hi, I was wondering what was wrong so glad I found this thread. I have a 9th gen iPad and I'm running the latest iOS 16.6.1. It still won't go back to the old format. Can anyone confirm that we have lost the ability to download issues? does this mean that we have to be online to read? Thanks and what a stupid, irritating change. I won't renew.
Other reviewers have mentioned Apple News, Financial Times, NYTimes, Economists.
I signed up for a free one-month trial of Apple News+ and so far I’m liking it. It’s still not the same as reading the old WSJ app (v13) in terms of a newspaper experience but it’s pretty good compared to other apps out there (at this point anything is better than v14). I was surprised at how many other newspapers and magazines are included with Apple News+. WSJ is also included, but maybe not every article.
It’s ironic that WSJ is actually pushing us to cancel subscription and use other cheaper apps (about $40/month for WSJ vs $10 for Apple News+). It sounds like most of us love the content of WSJ and were willing to pay a premium for it, but not when the delivery of the content is reduced to a suboptimal experience.
Folks, this is a big problem if you enjoy reading the WSJ. Until the dates mentioned by other posters, a subscriber could select one of two views to get into the features WE PAY FOR. Now all that's available is some streamlined version that does not give access to the features THAT WE PAY FOR. For instance: if you want to read the Opinion page, you usually like to see the columnists included, as you do on a laptop view or in print. Now, there is no way to look for opinion columnists...they're just not there. No one at the Journal has offered me a discount now that I can't see all the features. The most interesting part: how can they not be prepared for this flood of questions? Bad management? Murdoch's retirement? Pretty bad.
I see no change on my iPad. I even deleted both the iPad WSJ App and the WSJ Print Edition App. I then went to the app store to get the latest version but was only offered what was on the Cloud and version is still 14.2.0 and the only change I see is instead of 3 horizontal lines in the upper right corner is the word 'Sections' and when you click on it you see the same sections I saw with the 3 horizontal lines. NOTHING HAS CHANGED OR UPDATED ON THIS VERSION.
agree. There are apps that really use what the iPad offers as a reader and some that don’t.
I think where the WSJ went wrong is replacing a mature feature rich iPad app with a bare bones iOS app that was full of bugs.
and then compounded the mistake by responding get used to it which enraged a large number of paying customers.
Having same issue. The new approach is awful. Will cancel subscription as well
I encourage people to leave reviews in the app store and unsubscribe. Maybe if enough people do it WSJ will realize what a big mistake this is.
It’s annoying but it does work on the newest iPads. It will come around eventually. I hope.
How to return to the iPad view on WSJ app?
