Two major issues on iMac 27, Mid 2011

Initially my Apple ID Password quit working and asked me to create a new PW which I did. It continually showed that the new PW would not work but the PW does work and allows me to access my iCloud.com Accounts and allowed me access to Apple Communities. I hauled my iMac to a local Store that only works on Apple Products. They couldn’t get my PW to work but they told me that at my request installed the High Sierra OS again. Still the PW doesn’t work. They said for me to take it to an Apple Store which I did. They had NO Luck either but said for me to take my iMac back home and in Sys Prefs to “Sign Out” which would fix my problem. They started the process there and it said it had to upload(?) my iCloud data to a file called on my Macintosh HD/User/my user/iCloud Drive (Archive) where my Documents and Desktop files will be copied for later use.

I don’t know what I am looking for after it does the “Sign Out” because there are two of the “iCloud Drive (Archive)” folders now and nothing has happened yet and my Apple ID PW still doesn’t work.

THERE IS A SECOND MAJOR PROBLEM to which I will start a new thread.

Thanks to anyone who can help me on this issue.

First off, AppleID will only work 100% if you have MacOS 10.12.4 or later. Before then, if you setup multifactor authentication with your phone, or iPad, the code registered in the phone or iPad will have to be entered immediately following your password logging in the AppleID on your iMac.

Secondly, the mid-2011 iMac is the first iMac that came with Mac OS recovery preinstalled. Meaning internet recovery will try to load Mac OS 10.7 installer, which is not compatible with APFS, or able to see APFS formatted partitions which are common with High Sierra and later.

Did you make a clone backup of your system before messing around with the logins?

What were you running on your Mac before the logins starting messing up?

It is possible the hard drive has failed. Call 1-800-APLCARE and let them know what this store tried.

This is just a user to user forum with Apple Moderation.

You could try to get an external Firewire hard drove from http://www.macsales.com/ to install the OS on, which is much faster than the USB-2 the computer came with. A thunderbolt 2 hard drive is too, although it is equally hard to find.

Replacing the internal hard drive is not for the faint at heart, and really should be done by an authorized service center.
