Numbers Unexpectedly Quits and won't reopen

My 2014 iMac Retina 5K is updated as far as it can go (Big Sur 11.7.9) and I have had no problem with Numbers (V. 12.1, the version the App Store will allow me to download) until recently, when it "unexpectedly quit" and will not open any longer.

I have restarted in Safe Mode, holding down the shift key, and the problem remains. I have deleted the Numbers app and reinstalled it and that didn't work. I tried to find a preference file for it to delete in the library, but only saw some old iWork files, but deleted those. I read here that you could try signing out of iCloud, but I can't seem to find how to do that in System Preferences, as I don't see any place to sign out, just many places that I'm asked to sign in again.

I've looked at previous discussions here on the matter, and no one answer seems to resolve this strange problem that just occurred. If it will help, I can show the crash report that comes up after each unexpected quit:

Thank you so much for the reply. I should add that I rarely use Numbers, and usually only update a single invoice with it every month. Since it would not work on my iMac, I moved the document to iCloud and tried to open it with Numbers on my iPad Pro. The iPad Numbers opens fine, but it would not open this invoice, saying it was corrupted. I deleted it and used Time Machine to get an older version of it that was not yet corrupted. It opened in iPad and I was able to update it.

Now, when I was going to try your suggested test of a new user on my iMac, I first wanted to try to open it one more time with my user account. To my surprise, it opened up after a short delay. This causes me to wonder if the corrupted file was causing the app to quit even before it could be opened.

Regardless, the problem now seems resolved. I thank you for your replay and further attempts to aid me.

Hi bre bro,

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities! Safe mode was a great step. Next, we would also suggest testing in a new user. Being able to see if the issue occurs in another user account will to identify if it is something that is affecting your entire system or just one particular user account. To do this, you'll want to set up a Test User account and then try to replicate the issue in that account.

1. Choose Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Users & Groups.

2. Click the lock icon, then enter an administrator name and password.

3. Click the add button (+) below the list of users.

4. Complete the fields shown for a Standard or Administrator account, then click Create Account (or OK).

5. Go back up to the Apple menu in the upper left of the computer and select "Log Out". At the login screen, choose the "Test User" just made.

6. Once inside the Test Account, try to replicate the issue to determine if it just occurs in one account or on the whole computer.

Thank you.
