I can't access my Apple TV box from my laptop. I know if works because I use it with my television. I am trying to add the Hulu app to the list of app because it isn't listed, which is weird! So I am trying to download the latest software in the hopes Hulu is added... but I can't even see the box now that I connected it to my MacAir

Hulu now requires the 4th generation model or later, and that app is available from the on-device App Store (tvOS 13 or later). Earlier models do not have an App Store, and cannot have apps added by the user. Hulu ended their support for earlier models in Oct ’22, and then the non-functional app was removed from the earlier models.

You normally don’t need a computer to update Apple TV. Instead use the on-device update options.
I've always used the Mac's TV app on portable and desktop computers. World well for me.
For as far as I know you cannot use a MacBook as a monitor for an Apple TV. You can only use a TV or a display
