How prevent iPhone Mail app from deleting messages on Gmail server

I need to be able to go in the iPhone Mail app, and delete email there, without the version of that mail on the Gmail server also getting deleted.

The iPhone Mail app is taking up lots of space on my phone. I need to delete many. But the original versions on Gmail server should stay there.

iPhone 5c, iOS 10

There is no way to do that. Gmail always syncs mail between your iPhone and the gmail server.

One thing you can do is archive the email using the gmail web interface, then it won’t sync to your iPhone.
