Apple Pay - Payment not completed on Safari website order

I put an order on Wagamama.com restaurant website for takeaway and when it came to payment I opted for ApplePay. It pops up the ApplePay dialogue box but that then disappears before reqauaying ID authorisation ans I get “Payment not completed. “ temporary banner alert.

I am using an iPhone XR with iOS

16.6 and Safari browser

I’ve recently changed phones but I’m sure I’ve used ApplePay successfully elsewhere since changing. Though maybe not in Safari.

things I’ve already tried :

• restarting the phone
• checked that my Applepay is all set up
• checked the address on my account matches my card (ApplePay matched but my Apple account on the device differed. I fixed that but made no difference)
• checked my card shows in my banking app
• checked that my card hasn’t expired and that there are funds to pay
• turned on faceid which wasn’t setup. But that made no difference. It’s bouncing BEFORE the ID request stage.

any ideas anyone ?
