You are not addressing Apple on this site, besides, Apple does not retain that information.

Describe what you are seeing on your Mac that is prevent you from using it. For example, are you encountering one of these screens?

I do not know of an Apple site that will provide a receipt or proof of purchase for any given serial number, but you can start here: Check Your Service and Support Coverage - Apple Support. Entering the serial number will provide certain details of that device but to my knowledge they don't retain anything resembling a proof of purchase. It may be a starting point for you though.

Another possible choice: https://appleid.apple.com if you happen to know that person's Apple ID and password (which I surmise you probably don't).

You know what I'd do? Send the disgruntled employee an invoice for the Mac demanding payment for it in full, in lieu of releasing it from Activation Lock or otherwise relinquishing control of it to you. Allege that refusal to do that is akin to stealing company property and will be addressed in an appropriate manner. If they're smart, they'll relent. Quickly.

For future reference, assuming you are a growing company anticipating the need to equip employees with Macs or iPads and the like, what you need to do is contact Jamf and research MDM Profiles for devices that you own: Intro to mobile device management profiles - Apple Support. That way, devices that you purchase will remain within your sole control, to be maintained or withdrawn as you please.

I have no affiliation with Jamf but they are the largest and most well supported choice if you are interested in pursuing that option.

Ok thanks. From what I understand, you have a Mac that is unequivocally yours — you paid for it, you own it, that is without question. But, your Mac was given to an employee who subsequently configured it as his or her own, who has since left to "pursue other opportunities"... leaving you stuck with a Mac that you basically cannot use because that person is unwilling to help. Is that correct?

If so what the Apple Store told you is their official position. They will certainly help you to erase and reconfigure and reclaim that Mac as yours, but they absolutely positively won't do that unless you can unequivocally prove to them that it really is yours. The reason they do that is to discourage theft of portable and fairly expensive devices. You will find Apple unyielding on that matter, since that was their eventual response to what was quickly becoming a vocal and shrill public attitude that turning a blind eye to theft is tantamount to encouraging it. At the time, these pages became overwhelmed with demands for Apple to "do something!!!" and their response was Activation Lock for Mac - Apple Support and its complimentary implementation for iPhones / iPads.

Word quickly spread that stolen Apple devices are utterly useless, and thefts dropped dramatically.

Apologies for a long-winded explanation you did not ask for, but the bottom line is that you will need to prove to Apple beyond the shadow of a doubt that Mac is really yours before they will be willing to help. They may or may not accept something less than a receipt or proof of purchase, but all you can do is ask.

Start here: Start an Activation Lock support request.

That's astoundingly good news. You have everything you need for Apple to release that Mac from Activation Lock or anything else preventing you from using it as your own — which you can now unequivocally prove. Yes, print the email, or perhaps just bring another device containing that emailed receipt and show it to them.

I do not know what fee Apple will charge, if any. Send the bill to your disgruntled employee.

I have an employee (disgruntled) who won't give me their profile pw... and my Controller already paid them their final check. I can log in to the laptop and create a profile - but most of the hard drive is already full.

I went to the Apple Store in person to explain and they told me that if I sent in the MacBook Serial # - that they could resend the receipt to the purchasing email of the computer. But I lost the paper with the link & instructions on how to do it. The macbook was purchased online... but back then, I would often just "check out as guest" or possibly under one of my many Apple profiles... I don't remember which one.

I'm hoping to get the purchase receipt so I can then get on with the help desk and break into the existing profile and clean out the storage.

Thanks John!

Thanks John! Yes, this is my situation as you've described it. Yes, I am the employer... small start up... so when I purchased the MacBook for the employee (who was remote) (and I've purchased 8-10 more since then, I didn't have a "process" and didn't think it was important to purchase under my Apple profile - so I just selected Guest Checkout. Now I have a laptop that is basically useless.

When I visited the Apple Store the Expert knew the situation and quickly gave me a link address and in summary said "go here and enter the serial # and Apple will resend the purchase receipt to the email on file from the time of purchase. if that is you, now you'll have the original receipt to prove youre the owner of it and then we can help you." (not actual quote, summarized by me)

So that's what I'm trying to do. Do you know of such a page or process? I clicked the Activation Lock page you provided and it didn't seem to be what I was looking for.

Also, when I sent the new computer to my employee, I sent it NIB... never set it up. Again, small start up, I didn't know any better.

Thanks!

Hello John! I found my receipt for the purchase of the MacBook!

The site you gave me allowed me (Check your service) to put in the serial # (to check warranty and support status) and it obviously was no longer supported.... but it gave me the exact date of purchase and so then I was able to search my 4 emails and find the receipt!

So now that I have proof of purchase.... would you suggest I just print it (my credit card is also confirmed on the receipt) and then go into an Apple store and help get the machine restored?

Thank you!
