Default card not used, why.

I have 2 cards on Apple Pay and on 3 occasions recently the non default card was used for payment. I did nothing to make that happen so why has this happened.

You have two default cards. One for Apple Wallet app when using Apple Pay and one for Apple purchases. What is the default card for your Apple ID Account?


Set default payment method in Apple Account.


  1. Open the Settings app.
  2. Tap your name.
  3. Tap Media & Purchases, then tap View Account. You might be asked to sign in with your Apple ID.
  4. Tap Manage Payments.
  5. Tap Edit
  6. Move payment method you want to be default to top of list.
  7. Tap Done.


Apple ID Account will always be used first if there are funds in the account. If a payment method is declined by your bank, the next available method will be charged. Declined payment method will need to have CVV security code and phone number updated before it will be charged again.

I have only one card in Apple Pay and this is the one I want to use, my old card was not compatible with Apple Pay. Under payment methods (settings > Apple ID > my name -> payment & shipping) I now have two payment methods, on top is Apple Pay (which is linked with my new card), the second is my now cancelled card which I want to remove. After reading some other suggestions I also cancelled all my subscriptions and removed my family sharing etc, yet I am told I have an active subscription and cannot remove it.
