Can't remove Free Space in Disk Utility

I'm on a 2017 iMac running Monterey

I deleted the windows partition, so now I have free space that I would like to use to expand my Macintosh HD disk

I get an error when I try to remove the free space

So I tried running diskutil apfs resizeContainer disk2 0g in terminal, since my apfs is on disk2

but get this output

iMac 21.5″ 4K

FYI, you need to use BootCamp Assistant to remove Windows & restore the space to the macOS Container & Fusion Drive.

If First Aid is unable to fix errors, then run First Aid from Internet Recovery Mode, otherwise you will need to recreate the Fusion Drive followed by reinstalling macOS & restoring from a backup. While your Fusion Drive is not technically split, it is missing 972GB with the "free space" from the former Windows BootCamp partition. So you need to recreate the Fusion Drive to reclaim that free space for the Fusion Drive.

How to fix a split Fusion Drive - Apple Support

If there were no errors from First Aid, then there is a slim chance of using the command line to rejoin the free space to the Fusion Drive, but I don't recall specifically how to do so since there are several possible options to do so, but only one of them may possibly work.

Keep in mind there is also a possibility of the hard drive portion of the Fusion Drive is failing...would not be surprising on a six year old drive. If you can boot macOS normally, then try running DriveDx (free trial available) to check the health of the internal hard drive. Any "Warning" or "Failing" conditions for the hard drive indicates the hard drive is worn out and failing respectively....both conditions indicate the hard drive should no longer be used. DriveDx's summary analysis of an SSD is not an accurate analysis and should only be used as notification to manually analyze the SSD report to determine if the reported issues are a real problem, or just normal behavior for an SSD.

Assuming the internal hard drive is still healthy, then recreating the Fusion Drive is probably the fastest & easiest way forward, but first make sure you have a good backup of your data since recreating a Fusion Drive will destroy all data on the internal drives.
