i have a new external hard drive and it says not enough space
I am trying to use Time Machine with a new external hard drive but it won't back up because it says not enough space.

it probably means that your local drive is too full. usually when i see issues regarding lack of space for TM, it is due to not having enough space on your local drive, not the external TM drive. and since the external drive is empty, that may be the case.
how much free space do you have on your local drive?
