Child's physical location tied to iPad rather than Apple Watch

My son's location device was set to his iPad since that was the only Apple device he had.

We recently got him an Apple Watch that I setup through the family routine under my phone. When I look on "Find My" for him as part of my family, the location is still tied to the iPad rather than the watch. I can find each device independently just fine.... it's just that it looks like my son is home while his watch is at school.

For some reason, I cannot find any option on the watch to select "this device" for sharing location to disable it from the iPad.

Do I have to completely remove the iPad from my son's iCloud entirely and set up the watch as new? Any other tips would be greatly appreciated.

Was able to solve this by turning off Find My on the iPad and signing out (I did not do a factory reset) so it was no longer associate with his account. I then reset the Apple Watch so that there were no devices tied to my son's iCloud account.

From there, I set the Apple Watch back up as a Family watch tied to my son's iCloud account. Since that was the only device, it set his physical location to his Apple Watch as desired.

Lastly, I signed back into the iPad with my son's iCloud account it and all is well! My son's location is still mapped to the watch.

Actually, it doesn’t let you change the default device. In fact, tapping on it doesn’t let you do anything.

My daughter has an iPhone with her Apple Watch tied to it because Family Setup was not convenient in this case.

However, she’s not grown up enough to carry an iPhone with her (nor it is convenient) when she’s not under our supervision. That is the primary reason to wear an Apple Watch.

I’m facing the same problem. The Location is tied up to her iPhone, and while I’m able to track the Apple Watch under “Find My Device”, it’s more convenient for me to have her live real-time location tracked under “Find Me”, allowing me to set up geofences and location-based triggers.

I was considering creating another iCloud account for her and setting the Apple Watch with Family Setup, but… I already have 5 family members under Family, and I’m feeling like under a Catch 22 situation.

The solution would be really easy… Apple should actually let you choose which device is the primary location source as per default, and at any given moment.

If both devices are close together, it doesn’t matter which one provides the location.

If Apple Watch is active (detecting it is being “weared”), and both devices aren’t at the same location, it is logical to think that the Apple Watch is the actual location main source. At least we should be able to choose which one should be.
