iPod vs iPhone versions

My iPod died the swollen battery death. I want to purchase an older iPhone to connect to my home stereo receiver like I did with my iPod. I don't need cellular service. I heard iTunes changed too. Is there any older version that works well with iTunes? I use iTunes on my Windows 10 laptop? Old stuff... I haven't upgraded HW in awhile. All runs great with SW upgrades otherwise . But I know little about Apple

Hey honeybeeaz,

To help you make a decision, you're able to compare iPhone model's using the following link: iPhone - Compare Models - Apple

However, if you go with an iPhone, you'll need to borrow an active SIM card, as cellular service is required to complete the iPhone set up: If you can't activate your iPhone or iPad (Wi-Fi + Cellular) - Apple Support

You can look into getting an iPad. Or, check third-party authorized resellers, as they may still have older devices in stock. Like an iPod touch, or other older devices. Find Locations

The only caveat there is you may not be able to get service, if needed. Obtaining service for your Apple product after an expired warranty - Apple Support

We hope this helps. Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

Take care!

Hi honeybeeaz,

Thanks for following up. You would need an active SIM card in order to complete the setup process on your iPhone. This is outlined in the resource following, which covers how to Set up your iPhone or iPad:

"You need to connect to a Wi-Fi network or a cellular network to activate and continue setting up your device.

Tap the Wi-Fi network that you want to use or, if available, tap Continue Without Wi-Fi to use your device's cellular network. If you're setting up an iPhone or iPad (Wi-Fi + Cellular), you might need to insert your iPhone SIM card or iPad SIM card first. You might also be asked to activate your eSIM.

Get help if you can't connect to Wi-Fi or if you can't activate your iPhone."

Have a good one.
