advice on iphone 4 in the uk?

my uncle wants to buy me an iphone 4 in the usa, but i want to know whether if i put my uk simcard into the phone, will it work? obviously i dont want to buy a model thats networked with AT&T, but if i just buy a regular model from the retail shop and get it sent to me, will it work?

Unfortunately, no.

US iPhones are locked to AT&T, regardless of which country you end up wanting to use them in.
Is your uncle in the US and was planning on shipping the phone to you?
I'd suggest he just wire you the money, and you walk into your Apple store in the UK and purchase it yourself. This way you will be able to quickly and easily have it repaired or exchanged should something happen.

All iphone 4 sold in U.S are carrier locked to AT&T, even if you buy it from the online store in U.S still locked, even if you buy a no-commitment iphone 4 at a full price, it is still locked to AT&T.

I would suggest just buying it at UK. there is no difference with the UK model and US model and it's still the same iphone 4 with the same feature.
