QuickTime fatal error during uninstalling

When I tried to run it using an icon it too gives me an error. I tried to run it using Control Panel. This gave me a different error. It said "An exception occured while trying to run "C:\WINDOWS\system32\shell32.dll,Control_RunDLL "C:\WINDOWS\system32\QuickTime.cpl",QuickTIme".

This has all been perfect information, mibster. Every symptom is consistent with another application (other than QuickTime itself) having dropped old QuickTime componentry in a non-standard location on the PC. So let's go looking for that.

You'll need to make sure you are set up to view hidden files and folders in XP.

1. Open My Computer from the desktop or Start menu.
2. In the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
3. Click the View tab.
4. In the "Advanced settings" pane under "Hidden files and folders" make sure that the "Show hidden files and folders" option is selected, and the "Hide extensions for known file types" option is unchecked.
5. Click OK.

Now in My Computer, open your C drive.
Open the "Windows" folder.
Open the "system32" folder.

What files and/or folders can you see in there with QuickTime in the file/folder name? (In a standard installation of QuickTime, you should see precisely two files ... QuickTime.qts and QuickTimeVR.qtx ... and no QuickTime folders whatsoever.

Perfect again.

Drag the QuickTime.cpl, the QuickTimeCheck.ocx and the QuickTime folder out of system32 and onto your desktop.

Now try launching your QuickTime. Does it launch without the "QuickTime has encountered a problem" this time?

If so, restart the PC, and try another iTunes update. Does it go through without the fatal error this time?

It should be fine to drag those ones on the desktop into the trash now, especially if you've restarted the PC since dragging them onto the desktop. (Sometimes they can't be deleted if system files on the PC still "have hold" of them. But a restart is usually enough to break the grip.)

Please help! I am adding to this post as I have the same problem as mibsterwon, but have different files and folders within the system32 folder and don’t want to remove something I should’nt.

First a brief history of what went wrong. A few days ago, I opened up iTunes and got a pop-up advising me that a newer version of iTunes (v10) was available for download. I downloaded the latest versions of iTunes and QuickTime, but noticed that the QuickTime installation did not complete. When I tried to open QuickTime, it would not open. I tried downloading QuickTime again on it’s own, but it still would not open. So, I tried uninstalling QuickTime. Big mistake!

First, I tried uninstalling it using the “Uninstall QuickTime” icon under Start > All Programs > QuickTime. It went through the uninstall process, but at the end I got an Apple message saying that there was a problem with the uninstall, which had been aborted. I then tried to uninstall QuickTime via Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. This time, the uninstall process started, but I got the “fatal error” message. Tried several times, but to no avail. However, the QuickTime icons on my desktop, start menu and systray have all disappeared (although I still have About QuickTime, PictureViewer and Apple Software Update on the Start menu).

Problem now, is that iTunes won’t open! I have tried downloading iTunes 10 + QuickTime again. It said that the installation was successful, but iTunes still won’t start and there is no QuickTime.

I have looked in my system32 folder and have the following 3 QuickTime files and 1 QuickTime folder:

Files: QuickTime.qtp, QuickTime.qts, QuickTimeVR.qtx
QuickTime folder contains 7 QuickTime icons all ending in .qtx

There are no files or folders with iTunes in the name.

My OS is Windows XP SP3. Hope you can help.
