Apple Pencil 2nd gen incompatibility with iPad 10th generation

Why on earth would Apple screw up the design of their latest iPad release? Moving a lens to the side that takes away compatibility with the latest version of their Apple Pencil was just poorly thought out. The Apple Pencil 2nd gen with its magnetic pairing and charging is so much better than the alternative Apple Pencil 1st gen that requires an adapter and plugging in, it never occurred to me that Apple would pull such a bone-headed move. It may seem like a small flaw but I might be returning my two A2696 iPads just to have the convenience of using the 2nd pencil.

Apple invite submission of constructive comment and feedback via its Product Feedback portal. For iPad and iPadOS:

Feedback - iPad - Apple

The iPad10 does not have an inductive charging dock - principally as the front-facing camera has been relocated to the centre of the long-edge of the screen - and now occupies the internal cavity that might otherwise house the inductive charging dock components. As such, the iPad10 instead supports the first generation Apple Pencil that is paired and charged via the iPad’s USB-C port.

Your complaint is fully understood - hence the suggestion that you offer feedback, via the appropriate channel, to Apple.

Contributors here are all end-users, just like you. Other than the site Moderators, Apple neither monitors nor participates within these user-to-user technical communities. As such, assuming you wish your voice to be heard by Apple, in complaining here you will miss your intended audience.

Apple makes clear an iPad’s compatibility with Apple Pencil models within the individual device specifications - of which all are listed here:

iPad - Compare Models - Apple

There is also a separate document that lists definitive compatibility for Apple Pencil and iPad:

I understand that the iPad generation 10 does not have the inductive charging dock. I understand that the front facing camera was relocated to the center of the long-edge of the screen. My point is that this was a poor design decision. Removing the inductive charging dock and thus rendering the Apple Pencil 2nd gen incompatible was a very poor design choice by Apple. In the product description of the iPad Generation 10 they list the Apple Pencil 1st generation as compatible with the iPad generation 10. They should explicitly state that the Apple Pencil 2nd generation is incompatible. In my opinion, any new iPad launched by Apple should include the inductive charging dock and the Apple Pencil 1st generation should be discontinued.

I have made my views known to Apple through appropriate feedback channels.

I come to this forum to understand why Apple would make such an egregious design error. Everything I can find about the Apple Pencil 1st generation is inferior to the Apple Pencil 2nd generation. Why would Apple choose to develop a product that uses an inferior stylus? Plugging the stylus in to pair and charge with an adaptor seems like a 2010s design.

It seems that this was done to accommodate moving the camera lense to the side eliminating space for the inductive charger. I don’t understand why it was so critical to move the camera lense to the side. I can’t imagine that eliminating the inductive charger reduced the manufacturing CoGs significantly. Perhaps Apple is simply trying to create a market for the Apple Pencil 1st generation. Given a choice, I can’t imagine an end-user choosing a 1st gen over a 2nd gen Apple Pencil.

Apple’s advertising is also somewhat misleading. It says that the 10th generation iPad is compatible with the Apple Pencil without divulging that it is incompatible with the 2nd generation Apple Pencil.

They probably could still allow the pencil to work with the iPad 10, but they'd want to at least offer a case that charges and holds the pencil magnetically, or something like that, and then people could utilize some of the new features like double-tap if they wanted to, and buy the case if they need a more convenient way to attach and charge it.

Although, I do like them making sure that all previous gen apple-tech remains useful and that it holds it's value because I worry much less when I purchase something of a recent generation from apple, especially if theres something newer that could be on the horizon..

iPad accessories along with iPads should be useful for longer than phones but improvements need to be added as they come, so, I guess this could be apple making sure that demand in utility sticks around for several generations, for those who buy a spendy new iPad accessory to feel more sure with their purchase. It also makes sense why they would leave the Pro design very similar as previous generations, and that's simply because of re-usability of accessories and cases. Backwards compatibility should be very welcoming to see from a company that has a large share of the market, especially one that dominates in many areas.

Listen, my house caught on fire. Lost all my apple stuff. I went to Best Buy, said I needed a iPad and pencil to make life a little easier trying to reorganize an entire family. They said me a gen 2 pen, 10th gen iPad. I didn’t know this, contacted Apple. Software update first person. Second person. Follow these steps. Third person pushed me to their senior tech rep to tell me it wasn’t compatible. Who also took 20min, a tap in to my new iPad to check my settings. Just to finally tell me it’s not compatible. Apple feels cheap like android stuff used to be, especially when their tech savory staff doesn’t know this.
