I was going to backup my phone this morning. After connecting to my PC, iTunes suggested a software update. I agreed. During the update, an error appeared on my PC advising me the update could not proceed because of an error.

The screen of my phone is now black with the white logo and part of a horizontal white line that runs beneath the logo. I cannot hard start my phone. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The method for hard starting my phone as outlined above does not work. My phone does not reboot.

Sorry to hear you're experiencing this issue!

If your iPhone is stuck on the Apple logo, follow these steps:

  1. Make sure that the progress bar on your iPhone screen hasn't moved for at least one hour.
  2. If the progress bar hasn't moved for more than one hour, connect your device to a computer, then put your device into recovery mode with these steps:
    • iPhone 8 and later: Press and release the Volume Up button. Press and release the Volume Down button. Press and hold the Side button. Keep holding the Side button until you see the recovery mode screen.
    • iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus: Press and hold both the Volume Down button and the Sleep/Wake button. Keep holding the Volume Down button until you see the recovery mode screen.
    • iPhone 6s and earlier: Press and hold both the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button. Keep holding the Home button until you see the recovery mode screen.
  1. On a Mac with macOS Catalina 10.15 or later, open the Finder. On a Mac with macOS Mojave 10.14 or earlier, or on a PC, open iTunes. When asked to update or restore, choose Update. This will update your device to the latest version of iOS. If you choose Restore, it will erase your iPhone.

I did. I’m not sure if there is a correlation, but it finally turned on after connecting it to a second computer. Unfortunately, I lost all data when the software update loaded.

Although I’m an engineer, so reasonably cautious, it is possible I might have caused the trouble. I don’t know for sure. I hope you have better luck. It took maybe 20 on-off sequences to get it to come on.

Wish I had better news.

Haha I’m an engineer too, guess we just get unlucky. Thank you for responding.

I think I know what caused my issue, and hopefully this helps you. My windows pc had 140gb free space, and I believe that after backing up the iPhone and starting the update, it seems my disk filled up completely, causing the update to fail. Freeing up more space (150 more gb) allowed me to restore with the original backup. Hopefully you also still have a backup on your first pc, which would allow you to restore to the point before all this mess happened. If you’re on windows, you can check if the backup still exists by going to %appdata% then applecomputer/MobileSync/Backup. If it exists, you’re in luck!

Also iTunes automatically backs up your iPhone before doing an update, so hopefully you should have that backup on your original computer. Just make sure you have a lot of free space (atleast the size of your phones storage, for me this was 128gb) on your computer before trying to restore your iPhone with that backup. It seems to make a copy/extract the original backup onto the computer harddrive before copying it over to the phone. I tried restoring my phone with the computer backup, but it kept failing as my computer didn’t have enough storage.
