System Absolutely Crawls

Mac Mini, Late 2012, Dual-Core Intel Core i5, 2.5 GHz

Number of Processors: 1

Total Number of Cores: 2

L2 Cache (per Core): 256 KB

L3 Cache: 3 MB

Hyper-Threading Technology: Enabled

Memory: 4 GB

HDD: 500 GB (Rotational)

Software: clean install of Mac OS 10.15.7 Catalina.

The system absolutely crawls. Opening any app, opening a Finder window, clicking on a system preference, opening a file, etc shows the spinning disk and takes at least 5 -10 seconds to complete.

Is this normal? Where do I start to figure out what is wrong?

First of all - 2012 Mac Mini is 11 years old.. Please take that into consideration.

Now back to your issues -- since many apps these days do take up larger RAM than year of 2012's apps.

And if you want to keep this machine (I still have mine) - 2012 Mac Mini can take 16Gb memory (and it is user up-gradable). Just make sure you get it from reputable vendors (such as OWC or Crucial) because Macs are very picky with RAM. (just checked OWC, 16GB memory costs about 36.99 USD).

Second, your Mac Mini probably equipped with 5400 rpm HDD - this would also create a bottleneck.

If you are handy enough, you can follow some on-line DIY and change into SSD (again, OWC carries reputable SSD).

However, I would not spend lots of money on this machine..

Best of luck

On top of the small amount of RAM, if you just upgraded macOS, there is a chance that Spotlight is doing a complete re-indexing of your disk.

I came across that somewhere in the Snow Leopard > El Capitan > Sierra > High Sierra path, and the computer absolutely crawled for a day or two until Spotlight was done with going through the entire disk. (At least, it appeared to be Spotlight.)

Thanks to all those who replied. With respect to the hardware being old, so is the OS and so are the aps. In fact, I am only running one non-Apple-supplied app: Transmission. and that one is compatible with Catalina. So I don't think the issue is the demands of new software. I realize 4GB of memory isn't excessive but Activity Mononitor shows low "memory pressure" with only about 2.8 GB used. If I were to run a lot more apps I can see how that might be an issue. The rotational HDD is not as quick as an SDD but once again it shouldn't cause constant spinning wheels. There just isn't enough going on. I have encountered the Spotlight issue before but Activity Monitor shows mds only taking a fraction of the cpu. Maybe it's disk access. I'll give it a couple of days.

I have read that AFPS is slow on rotating disks. But wasn't it introduced with High Sierra? And if it continues, I'll try Safe Mode to see if that makes a difference.

I have ordered some extra memory and an SDD because I plan to use it more heavily in the future. But I think the system should be performing satisfactorily under my current conditions. Maybe I'll look around for a Benchmarking program.

Thanks for all your suggestions.
